Trans candidate runs for Congress: ‘Government needs diversity’
Transgender Delaware Democrat Announces Bid for Congress
Delaware state senator Sarah McBride, a biological male born Tim McBride, has announced a historic run for the House of Representatives. McBride aims to become the first transgender member of Congress, bringing much-needed diversity to the government. With Delaware having only one House seat and the incumbent, Rep. Lisa Blunt Rochester (D.), running for the Senate, McBride sees an opportunity to make a difference.
“It’s clear that diversity in government is necessary for us to not just ensure we have a healthy democracy but also to truly deliver for people,” McBride told the News Journal.
The state senator emphasizes that their candidacy is not solely about being a trans member of Congress. McBride’s experience working in the Obama administration and winning over 70 percent of the vote in the last State Senate election demonstrate their qualifications and dedication to public service.
McBride’s candidacy comes at a time when the importance of diversity is being recognized across various sectors. Companies like Bud Light and Target have faced conservative backlash for their support of transgender rights. Target, for instance, received bomb threats from individuals within the LGBTQ+ community after facing pressure to stop selling certain transgender merchandise.
