Harvard Prof Accused of Faking Data in Honesty Research
Harvard Professor Accused of Fabricating Results in Published Papers
A shocking scandal has emerged involving a renowned Harvard professor who specializes in studying honesty. It has been alleged that this professor fabricated results in multiple papers that were published in esteemed peer-reviewed journals.
The Chronicle of Higher Education reported on June 16 that a 2012 paper co-written by Francesca Gino, a professor at Harvard Business School, relied on fraudulent data.
The paper claimed to demonstrate that individuals who signed an honesty pledge at the beginning of a form were less likely to cheat compared to those who signed at the end. The study was based on three separate experiments conducted by five different researchers, which were then consolidated into one comprehensive paper.
Max Bazerman, one of the co-authors of the paper, revealed to the Chronicle that Harvard University provided evidence proving that one of the experiments conducted had utilized fabricated data.
This paper garnered over 500 citations from other scholars and was even referenced in a 2016 report on social and behavioral sciences by the Obama administration.
In 2015, the researchers published another paper stating that they were unable to replicate their initial findings. Then, in August 2021, a group of three other researchers posted their findings on a blog, revealing that data from one of the experiments in the 2012 paper had been manipulated. As a result, the 2012 paper was retracted a month later.
The blog, DataColada, has since shared additional evidence indicating that three other papers co-authored by Gino relied on falsified data. The authors of the blog contacted Harvard Business School in the fall of 2021 to express their concerns. Bazerman confirmed that these three papers are of “significant concern” to Harvard, although he did not specify if they were the same ones identified by the blog authors.
Gino has co-authored numerous studies on various topics in behavioral science, including decision-making, leadership, and unethical behavior. She has also served as a speaker and consultant for esteemed companies such as Google, Walmart, and Goldman Sachs.
According to her faculty bio, Gino has been placed on administrative leave. However, the Internet Archive archives show that this information was not updated as recently as mid-May.
