DeSantis vows swift action at US borders.
Ron DeSantis Unveils Bold Plan to Secure the Nation’s Borders
Ron DeSantis has a clear vision for securing the nation’s borders, and he’s wasting no time in taking action. If elected as president, DeSantis plans to implement his comprehensive plan on day one.
Speaking in Eagle Pass, Texas, on June 26, the Florida governor and Republican nominee outlined his strategy, which includes 35 specific actions under headings like “Stop the Invasion,” “Build the Wall,” “Hold Cartels Accountable,” and “Work With States to Enforce the Law.”
DeSantis’s plan covers a wide range of measures, from cracking down on “catch-and-release” policies to deploying the military at the border and even into Mexican territory if necessary to combat cartel activity.
One of his standout proposals is using the Navy and Coast Guard to prevent the importation of fentanyl precursor chemicals into Mexico if the Mexican government fails to cooperate in stopping it.
“When you don’t have control of your own border, that’s an American problem.”
The Urgent Need for Border Security
DeSantis emphasized the urgent need for border security, highlighting the devastating consequences of the current crisis. He pointed to the surge of fentanyl entering the country, leading to drug overdose deaths, as well as the crimes committed by illegal aliens and the flawed asylum system.
- Children being used as pawns to facilitate illegal entry into the United States
- A broken court system releasing illegal immigrants with court dates they often skip
- The escalating violence along the border
- An overwhelmed Border Patrol and Coast Guard lacking support from the Biden administration
DeSantis made it clear that the border crisis is not just a problem for Texas or Arizona but an issue that affects the entire nation.
He highlighted the strain on social services due to the cost of providing medical care and welfare payments to illegal immigrants, as well as the burden on the justice system.
DeSantis highlighted his previous actions as governor of Florida, including sending state forces to assist at the Texas border and intercepting boats with migrants from Cuba and Haiti.
He emphasized the need for tangible results, not empty promises, from both Republicans and Democrats in addressing the border crisis.
DeSantis’s plan encompasses various strategies to combat the issue comprehensively:
- Ending catch-and-release and holding apprehended individuals until their court dates
- Requiring asylum seekers to remain in Mexico during the processing of their claims
- Increasing Border Patrol pay and recruiting military veterans and police officers
- Ending birthright citizenship for the children of illegal immigrants
- Taxing money sent abroad by illegal aliens, with exemptions for citizens and legal residents
- Prosecuting entities that circumvent immigration laws and strengthening penalties for human trafficking and smuggling
DeSantis also plans to restrict visas for countries that refuse to accept deportees and vows to use every available resource to build the wall along the remaining 600 miles of the open border.
He cites the success of Israel’s border fence with Egypt, which led to a more than 99 percent decrease in illegal crossings, as evidence that walls work.
Furthermore, DeSantis pledges to hold drug cartels accountable by designating them as transnational criminal organizations and imposing sanctions on them, their leaders, and those who do business with them.
DeSantis also emphasizes the need for appropriate rules of engagement to address the use of force along the border. He condemns human traffickers who brazenly cut through the wall’s steel beams and advocates for a strong response to protect American territory.
“If the cartels are cutting through the border wall, trying to run product into this country, they’re going to end up stone-cold dead as a result of that bad decision. And if you do that one time, you are not going to see them mess with our wall ever again.”
DeSantis even goes as far as reserving the right for U.S. forces to operate in Mexico if the Mexican government fails to address cartel drug manufacturing.
With his comprehensive plan, DeSantis aims to secure the nation’s borders and protect American citizens from the devastating consequences of illegal immigration and drug trafficking.
