President Joe Biden has made a groundbreaking announcement on Monday, revealing that $42.5 billion from his infrastructure law will be allocated to expand high-speed internet access across the United States.

This funding will benefit all 50 states, including Washington D.C. and U.S. territories, with the aim of improving internet access for the 7% of people living in underprivileged areas. The White House has set a goal to connect all residents and small businesses to reliable and affordable high-speed internet by 2030.

In a recent statement, President Biden compared this investment to President Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s efforts to bring electricity to America, calling it an “equally historic investment.”

“For today’s economy to work for everyone, internet access is just as important as electricity or water or other basic services,” he said.

“But it’s not enough to have access—you need affordability and access,” the president emphasized, highlighting his administration’s commitment to working with service providers to reduce costs and make high-speed internet more accessible to all.

The amount of funding allocated for internet access will depend on the number of unserved locations or locations with inadequate internet speeds. The funding includes over $1 billion for 19 states, with the remaining states receiving varying amounts.

Once the funding commitments are fulfilled, states will be required to develop plans to bring broadband to communities in need. Any remaining funds should be used to improve internet connectivity for those with slower speeds.

President Biden revealed that more than 35,000 projects are already underway to lay cable and provide internet access.

However, despite this significant announcement, the president may face challenges due to factors such as the cost, the complexity of building a broadband network, and gaps in the government’s understanding of who requires connectivity.

Following the announcement, President Biden is set to launch the second phase of his “Investing in America” tour, where he will travel and promote new legislation on infrastructure, the economy, and climate change.

The president’s advisors believe that educating voters about Biden’s policies is crucial for his 2024 reelection campaign, hoping that increased awareness will garner more support.

It is worth noting that inflation has become a growing concern during his administration. A recent ABC News poll revealed that “54-36%” of Americans believe former President Donald Trump handled the economy better while in office than Biden has.

Vice President Kamala Harris has already been traveling across the country to promote the infrastructure law and the administration’s internet plan. During her visits, she has highlighted the challenges people face in accessing the internet, such as having to bring their children to McDonald’s parking lots for homework.

State broadband officials have expressed their interest in closely monitoring how the funding aligns with their local needs after meeting with President Biden at the White House on Monday.
