Bloomberg reported, citing “two people familiar with the matter,” that Biden has started using a continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) machine to treat sleep apnea.

CNN later confirmed the use of a CPAP machine by President Biden, with White House spokesman Andrew Bates stating, “Since 2008, the president has disclosed his history with sleep apnea in thorough medical reports. He used a CPAP machine last night, which is common for people with that history.”

The report also mentioned that the president has been using the device in recent weeks to improve sleep quality.

Sleep Apnea and its Serious Consequences

Sleep apnea is a common condition that can cause breathing difficulties during sleep, as explained by the Mayo Clinic. Those affected may experience shallow sleep and loud snoring due to airway obstruction. It is important to note that sleep apnea can have serious, even fatal consequences.

Dr. John S. Oh, an assistant professor in the Department of Surgery at Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center, conducted a study that revealed individuals with obstructive sleep apnea are at a significantly higher risk of sudden death compared to those without the condition, according to MedicalNewsToday.

“Obstructive sleep apnea is a common condition that can have fatal consequences,” Dr. Oh emphasized.

A CPAP machine, which applies air pressure through a face mask, is commonly used to open airways and alleviate obstruction during sleep. It assists individuals with sleep apnea in achieving better sleep quality.

President Biden has previously disclosed his diagnosis of sleep apnea. He first received treatment for the condition in 2006 and has undergone nasal and sinus surgeries, according to ABC News.

If re-elected in 2024, Biden would serve until the age of 86, solidifying his position as the oldest president in American history.
