Freedom Caucus-aligned group to unveil documentary on GOP rebellion during McCarthy speaker vote.
A Historic Revolt: House Freedom Caucus Documentary Reveals GOP Rebellion
A conservative organization closely aligned with the House Freedom Caucus is set to release a captivating documentary that delves into the intense GOP revolt during the House speaker election in January. This unprecedented rebellion led to a historic 15-round vote, and the documentary titled People’s House by FreedomWorks promises to provide an inside look at the events that unfolded.
The trailer for People’s House features exclusive interviews with influential HFC members, including Reps. Chip Roy (R-TX) and Ralph Norman (R-SC), who spearheaded the revolt against Kevin McCarthy until crucial concessions were made. The division within the party resulted in five days of failed votes and subsequent negotiations, ultimately leading to hard-line conservatives securing prominent committee assignments and implementing rule changes to solidify their influence over the chamber.
A Message of Change
In the trailer, Rep. Andy Biggs (R-AZ), who initially voted against McCarthy before casting a “present” vote in the final round, emphasizes the significance of their demands, stating, “We had something that Mr. McCarthy wanted more than anything. Because of that, we were able to try and restore this institution to its credible founding.”
Although McCarthy eventually secured the speaker’s gavel after 15 rounds of voting, it came at the cost of compromises and key concessions to members of his right flank. One notable concession was a rule change for calling a motion to vacate, lowering the requirement to allow a vote if only one member requests it.
Additionally, the GOP leader agreed to appoint HFC members to influential assignments on powerful committees such as Oversight and Rules. The documentary features interviews with the members who led the rebellion, highlighting the HFC’s efforts to fundamentally change Congress.
“I’m always amazed by people who send us here to change Washington, and then you start doing it, and they go, ‘Oh, don’t do that. You might upend the apple cart,'” expressed Roy, one of the first members to vote against McCarthy. “I want to upend the apple cart. That’s why you sent me here.”
A Growing Rebellion
The film delves into how the rebellion evolved from a small group of holdout votes to a substantial coalition of hard-liners, aiming to showcase the HFC’s true power within the lower chamber of Congress.
“They didn’t anticipate us going from five [holdout votes] to eight to 12 to 20,” revealed Norman, one of the initial members to defy McCarthy’s bid for speakership.
The documentary also includes interviews with HFC Chairman Scott Perry (R-PA), Rep. Thomas Massie (R-KY), and Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-CO), who consistently voted against McCarthy in all rounds before ultimately casting a “present” vote. Mark your calendars for July 25th, when this compelling documentary will be released.
