Delphi Killer confessed to murders in jail call, prosecutors claim.
The Shocking Confession: Man Accused of Delphi Murders Admits to Killing Teen Girls
The man accused of murdering two teenage best friends in Delphi, Indiana, in 2017 allegedly admitted to his wife in a jailhouse phone call that he killed the teen girls.
According to recently released court documents, prosecutors claim that Richard Allen, 50, confessed to his wife during a phone call from jail on April 3, 2023. The court documents reveal that Allen’s wife abruptly hung up after the shocking confession.
“Investigators had the phone call transcribed and the transcription confirms that Richard Allen admits that he committed the murders of Abigail Williams and Liberty German,” prosecutors alleged. “He admits several times within the phone call that he committed the offenses as charged.”
Previously, prosecutors stated in court that Allen “confessed five or six times.” However, his defense attorney, Bradley Rozzi, argued that Allen’s deteriorating mental health made his incriminating statements unreliable.
In court, Allen appeared wearing a yellow prison jumpsuit, looking gaunt. His defense attorneys emphasized that he had made inconsistent statements since his arrest, attributing them to the stress of the situation and his declining mental and physical health.
Ballistics Evidence Under Scrutiny
The latest court documents reveal that best friends Abby Williams and Libby German died from a knife attack, despite an unspent bullet being used to link Allen to the murders. Allen’s defense team has filed a motion to suppress the ballistics evidence from the trial, as reported by NewsNation. The defense argues that forensic firearms analysis, which has recently come under fire for its reliability, should not be used against their client.
A trial has been scheduled for early next year.
Unreliable Witness Testimony
The probable cause affidavit disclosed that Allen admitted to being on the Indiana hiking trail where German and Williams were last seen alive and where their bodies were found on February 14, 2017. The affidavit also highlighted the unreliability of witness testimony. Allen claimed to have seen three juvenile females on the trail, and their descriptions of a man they encountered, believed to be Allen, varied. One described him as wearing light blue jeans and a jacket, while another mentioned a black hoodie, black jeans, and black boots. The third girl described him as wearing a blue or black windbreaker jacket and baggy jeans.
Witnesses also reported seeing a vehicle parked near the trails, with descriptions ranging from a purple PT Cruiser or small SUV to a “smart” car. Allen owned a 2016 black Ford Focus and a 2006 gray Ford 500 in 2017, but the witness descriptions do not align precisely with either of his vehicles.
