President Biden Criticizes Supreme Court’s Decision on Affirmative Action
President Joe Biden responded passionately on Thursday to the Supreme Court’s recent decision to effectively end affirmative action in college admissions. He criticized the court for breaking with decades of precedent and expressed his strong disagreement with their ruling.
“I strongly disagree with the court’s decision because affirmative action is so misunderstood,” Biden said at the White House before departing for New York.
“Many people wrongly believe that affirmative action allows unqualified students to be admitted ahead of qualified students. This is not how college admissions work,” he emphasized.
Understanding College Admissions
Biden went on to explain the process of college admissions, highlighting that prospective students must first meet the school’s initial requirements such as test scores and GPA. Only after meeting these criteria are they considered for admission, with a number of factors, including race, taken into account.
When questioned about the Supreme Court being labeled as “a rogue court,” Biden responded, “This is not a normal court.”
Supreme Court’s Ruling
The Supreme Court ruled on Thursday that the use of racially discriminatory admissions criteria at U.S. colleges is unconstitutional, effectively banning the use of affirmative action in higher education. This has long been a goal for conservatives.
Chief Justice John Roberts wrote in the court’s opinion that universities have wrongly prioritized an individual’s identity based on the color of their skin, rather than their challenges overcome, skills developed, or lessons learned. He stated that our constitutional history does not tolerate such a choice.
Biden’s Disagreement
However, President Biden strongly disagrees with the court’s ruling, emphasizing the importance of providing opportunities to individuals who have been left behind.
“I believe our colleges are stronger when they’re racially diverse,” the president said. “We cannot let this decision be the last word.”
During his remarks, Biden urged colleges across the country not to abandon their commitment to enrolling diverse student bodies that reflect the true diversity of America.
“We need a new path forward. A path consistent with the law that protects diversity and expands opportunities for all,” he concluded.
