Biden warns against permanently politicizing Supreme Court with court packing.
President Biden: Supreme Court Rulings Went Too Far, But Court-Packing Not the Solution
In a recent interview with MSNBC, President Joe Biden expressed his concerns about the U.S. Supreme Court’s recent rulings, stating that they have gone too far. However, he firmly opposed the idea of court-packing, emphasizing that it could permanently politicize the institution.
This interview marked Biden’s first appearance on television since May, and he voiced his worries about the conservative justices potentially overstepping their boundaries.
“But I think if we start the process of trying to expand the court, we’re going to politicize it maybe forever in a way that is not healthy and that you can’t get back,” Biden said.
The president’s remarks came after the Supreme Court’s decision to end affirmative action in college admissions, a move that Biden criticized for breaking with decades of precedent.
During the MSNBC interview, Biden further elaborated on his concerns, pointing to recent judgments such as the overturning of Roe v. Wade and the repeal of affirmative action. He accused the court of disregarding 50-60 years of precedent and losing touch with “the basic value system of the American people.”
While Senate Democrats proposed a bill in May to expand the Supreme Court by adding four new seats, Biden dismissed the idea as a mistake.
“The judgment was that it didn’t make sense because it can become so politicized in the future,” Biden explained.
However, Biden expressed hope that the court’s legitimacy is now being questioned in ways it hasn’t been before, indicating that he is actively exploring alternative solutions.
Supreme Court Strikes Down Affirmative Action Policies
By a vote of 6-3, the Supreme Court recently struck down the use of racially discriminatory admissions policies in U.S. colleges. This decision, made on June 29, effectively ended the practice of affirmative action in higher education, which has long been a target for conservatives.
The ruling will have an immediate impact as one million high school seniors begin applying for fall admission to colleges and universities across the country.
