Doctors to Attempt Leg Reattachment After Woman’s Tragic Moving Walkway Mishap
A Tragic Accident at Don Mueang International Airport
A traveler in Thailand experienced a horrifying incident on Thursday that resulted in the loss of her leg. The unfortunate accident took place on the airport’s moving walkway at Don Mueang International Airport in Bangkok, Thailand.
“Footage from security cameras at the airport’s domestic terminal shows the passenger collapsing at 8.30am after being hit by a suitcase while on the walkway between departure gates four and five,” according to Asia News Network.
The incident occurred when the passenger’s leg got stuck on the edge of the conveyor belt after she collapsed, as reported by the news service. Graphic images circulating on Thai-language media and Facebook depict the young woman in excruciating pain as she struggles to free her leg from the conveyor belt.
The victim had intended to fly from Bangkok to Nakorn Sri Thammarat.
A Desperate Attempt to Save Her Leg
A medical team made efforts to free her left leg from the device but ultimately had to resort to amputating it above the knee, as reported by the New York Post.
The woman was immediately rushed to Bhumibol Adulyadej Hospital, but she was later transferred to Bumrungrad International Hospital, where there is hope for her leg to be reattached, according to the Straits Times.
Investigation and Future Plans
Airport director Karun Thanakunjeeraphat stated at a news conference that the moving sidewalk, also known as a “travelator,” has been in use at the airport since 1996. He mentioned that the system has not been updated and its sensors differ from those found on newer travelators, as per the report.
The walkway, manufactured by the Japanese company Hitachi, has been closed for investigation into the cause of the accident.
The airport had already planned to replace several old travelators by 2025, but the director suggested that the replacement process may be expedited now.
Support and Compensation
The airport management expressed their sympathies to the victim and announced that they would cover her medical expenses and provide compensation for the partial loss of her left leg, as stated in a post on the airport’s Facebook page, according to the Strait Times.
