Op-Ed: Biden’s Failure Harms America – Damage Extent Unknown for Years

Possible Implosion in Russia Overshadows Important Security Issues in America

Prior to recent developments in Russia’s conflict with Ukraine, the news cycle was dominated by the indictment of former President Donald Trump and Hunter Biden’s plea deal for tax evasion and falsifying information. However, amidst these headlines, crucial news about America’s overall security has gone largely unnoticed.

President Joe Biden’s administration seems to prioritize security far less than it should, as evidenced by the ongoing disaster at the southern border. In fiscal year 2022 alone, U.S. Customs and Border Protection encountered a staggering 2.3 million illegal aliens. While most Americans are aware of this issue, the media has focused primarily on the physical border crisis, neglecting the digital security concerns.

What many Americans don’t realize is that on a daily basis, approximately 560,000 new pieces of malware are created. These malicious programs, including viruses, trojans, keyloggers, and crypto miners, are designed to steal data, execute spying operations, or disrupt critical infrastructure.

Unfortunately, President Biden has failed to address these critical issues adequately. Recent reports reveal that several government agencies, including the Department of Energy, and numerous private and public sector entities have fallen victim to new Russia-based cyberattacks. These attacks exploited vulnerabilities in MOVEit software, leading to significant breaches.

The responsibility for these attacks lies with the Russian cyber gang known as CLOP. They have demanded ransom payments from their victims, which include Georgia’s state university system, British Airways, Shell, and the state governments of Minnesota and Illinois. Similar to the SolarWinds attack, it may take months or even years to fully comprehend the extent of these Russian hacks.

This is just one example of the Biden administration’s failure to address the evolving challenges in America’s cyber defenses. Earlier this year, the U.S. faced cyber espionage from a Vietnamese hacking group, targeted attacks from North Korean hackers on cybersecurity research firms, and state-sponsored hacking by China on critical cyber infrastructure.

It is crucial for the U.S. to lead the world in cyber matters, and Big Tech must play its part as well. In 2023, there has been a significant increase in “malvertising” through Google Ads, posing a threat to online safety. Americans can take simple security measures like using ad blockers to avoid malware-laced ads.

On an international level, the ongoing cyberwarfare calls for increased cooperation. The Abraham Accords Cybersecurity Cooperation Act, born out of Trump’s diplomatic achievement in the Abraham Accords, is a promising step towards enhanced international communication to mitigate damages from major cyberattacks.

Unfortunately, the Biden administration has also failed in the realm of cyber defense. As we navigate the next year and a half of Joe Biden’s presidency, it remains to be seen if America can withstand the challenges in the cybersphere.
