Michigan Residents Face Potential Prison Sentences and Fines for Misgendering

Michigan residents could soon find themselves in hot water if they misgender someone, as a new bill making its way through the Democrat-controlled State Senate threatens hefty prison sentences and fines. The bill, HB 4474, was passed by Democrats in the state’s House of Representatives and aims to add “sexual orientation” and “gender identity or expression” as protected classes. It would also criminalize actions that cause a person to “feel terrorized, frightened, or threatened.”

If the bill is passed by the State Senate and signed into law by Democratic governor Gretchen Whitmer, individuals accused of misgendering someone could face up to five years in prison or a $10,000 fine. This legislation has sparked concerns among conservatives, who fear that it could be used as a weapon to silence and financially cripple those with differing viewpoints.

“Make no mistake about it. Those advocating for this legislation will wield these policies as a weapon capable of destroying conservative expression or viewpoints grounded in the sacred,” warned William Wagner, a former federal judge and legal counsel in the U.S. Senate.

This bill is just the latest example of the left’s push to impose its views on gender identity through legislation. In California, Democrats have advanced legislation that considers a child’s “gender affirmation” as a crucial aspect of their health, safety, and welfare in custody disputes. This means that parents who affirm their child’s transgender status would be favored in custody battles.

Rachel Levine, a transgender doctor appointed by President Joe Biden as assistant secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services, has emphasized the importance of “gender-affirming care” for both minors and adults. Levine argues that this type of care is not only health care but also mental health care and even suicide-prevention care.

“It’s such an important issue for our youth and adults,” Levine stated. “We often say that gender-affirming care is health care—gender-affirming care is mental health care—and gender-affirming care is literally suicide-prevention care.”

Meanwhile, the Biden administration has allocated nearly $4.6 million to support LGBT initiatives abroad, including drag shows and pride parades.
