Next Installment of Supplemental Security Income Program Coming in One Month

Recipients of the Social Security Administration’s Supplemental Security Income (SSI) program can expect their next payment in just one month, according to the agency’s schedule.

The payment is scheduled to be sent out on Tuesday, Aug. 1. However, it’s important to note that there will be no payments in July. This is because July’s payment was already distributed in June due to a unique scheduling circumstance. In order to ensure that recipients still receive a total of 12 checks per year, the SSA adjusted the payment schedule accordingly.

For example, this year, recipients received two payments in June because July 1 fell on a Saturday. Typically, recipients receive one payment each month. The adjusted schedule ensures that recipients still receive the same number of payments overall, even if the distribution varies from month to month.

Months with Two Payments

There are four months in which two payments will be delivered in the same month this year: March, June, September, and December. This is due to the fact that the first of the month falls on a weekend in April, July, and October. Additionally, Jan. 1 is always a holiday.

It’s important to note that the amount of money received by each beneficiary may vary depending on their filing status. Individuals who file individually can receive a maximum of $914 per month. Eligible couples can receive up to $1,371, while essential persons, who live with SSI recipients and provide necessary care, receive a monthly payment of $458, according to the SSA.

In order to qualify for SSI, individuals must be over 65 and meet specific financial requirements, or be at least partially blind. Other accepted applicants include those with physical or mental conditions that significantly limit their daily activities for a period of 12 months or more, or may result in death.

It’s important to note that SSI payments are separate from regular Social Security benefits received by retirees. The SSI program specifically provides monthly payments to adults and children with blindness or other disabilities and limited income.

The SSA first began issuing SSI payments in January 1974, and payment rates have increased over the years to account for cost-of-living adjustments, according to the agency.
