JD Vance urges strong American leadership to deploy military forces in order to combat the drug cartels at the border.
Sen. JD Vance Calls for Military Action Against Drug Cartels in Mexico
During his appearance on NBC’s Meet the Press Sunday, Sen. JD Vance (R-OH) passionately advocated for the president to take immediate action against the drug cartels in Mexico. Vance, who has a personal connection to the opioid crisis, emphasized the urgent need to combat the fentanyl epidemic.
Vance highlighted the alarming fact that just one dose of fentanyl can be fatal, and a significant portion of this deadly drug is originating from Mexico and China. He firmly stated, “I want to empower the President of the United States, whether that’s a Democrat or a Republican, to use the power of the US military to go after these drug cartels. What will happen in three years if the Mexican drug cartels become more powerful than the Mexican government itself?”
Recognizing the complexities of dealing with China, Vance proposed a different approach. Instead of military intervention, he suggested implementing economic penalties such as increased tariffs. “We can extract a massive economic cost,” Vance asserted. “I believe the Biden administration should pursue this strategy.”
Vance also expressed his strong opposition to the legalization of fentanyl, citing the failed experiment in Portland. Despite legalizing the drug in 2019, the city had to reverse its decision last month due to a significant increase in fentanyl-related deaths. In 2021 alone, Portland recorded over 700 deaths, nearly tripling the number from 2019.
The severity of the fentanyl crisis is evident in the staggering amount of the drug seized at ports of entry. In 2013, only two pounds of fentanyl were confiscated, while last year saw over 10,000 pounds seized, according to the Washington Examiner’s Anna Giaritelli.
It is crucial for the United States to take decisive action against the drug cartels and address the fentanyl crisis head-on. With strong leadership and effective strategies, progress can be made in combating this deadly epidemic.
