Baltimore mayor slams focus on ‘suburban white’ community post mass shooting.

Baltimore Mayor Criticizes Attention Given to “Suburban White” Communities in Wake of Mass Shootings

Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott expressed his frustration with the disproportionate attention given to “suburban white” communities in the aftermath of mass shootings. He made these remarks following a block party shooting that resulted in two deaths and numerous injuries.

Mayor Scott’s Perspective

“When we discuss mass shootings in this country, the focus is often on schools in rural or suburban white communities,” Scott stated in an interview with CNN. “However, when similar incidents occur in cities like Baltimore, Chicago, or D.C., they don’t receive the same level of attention.”

Mayor Scott emphasized the importance of recognizing that black American lives, including the lives of children, matter just as much as anyone else’s. He called for equal treatment and attention for all victims of mass shootings or murders involving illegal firearms.

“We cannot allow the sanctity of American guns to outweigh the sanctity of American lives, especially the lives of our children,” Scott asserted. “This is a change that we must strive for as a nation.”

The mayor clarified that he is not advocating for the removal of gun rights but rather for stricter regulations to prevent young individuals from easily obtaining firearms.

“No one is suggesting that people should be denied their right to bear arms. However, it should not be easier for a young person to acquire a gun than for me to purchase allergy medication from a local pharmacy,” Scott explained.

Regarding the recent block party shooting, no arrests have been made yet. When questioned about his ability to gain the trust and support of the Baltimore community, Scott disagreed with the notion that his government lacked the people’s trust. He highlighted the city’s efforts towards reform, particularly in the aftermath of the Freddie Gray unrest.

Mayor Scott’s Response to Trust Concerns

“We have been actively working with the Department of Justice and other agencies to implement necessary reforms,” Scott stated. “Under the leadership of former Police Commissioner Michael Harrison and now Commissioner Richard Worley, we have made significant progress.”

Despite the recent violence, Baltimore has seen a 20% reduction in homicides and a decrease in nonfatal shootings, according to Mayor Scott. He emphasized the city’s commitment to continuing this work and building stronger relationships within the community.

“Even one act of violence is one too many,” Scott declared. “We will persist in our efforts to rebuild bridges and foster a safer environment for all residents of Baltimore.”
