Pope Francis promotes Archbishop known for book on kissing to high Vatican position.
Pope Francis Appoints Longtime Friend and Collaborator to Key Vatican Role
In a move that has sparked controversy on social media, Pope Francis has elevated Archbishop Víctor Manuel Fernández of La Plata, Argentina, to the position of Prefect of the Dicastery of the Doctrine of the Faith (DDF). This announcement comes as no surprise, as Fernandez is known to be a close collaborator of the Pope.
Considered one of the top religious positions at the Vatican, the prefect is responsible for preserving Catholic doctrine in line with 2,000 years of history and tradition, as well as evaluating disciplinary action against clergy through Canon Law.
A Trusted Collaborator
Archbishop Fernandez has been a key supporter of Pope Francis, assisting in the drafting of some of his most well-known written works, including “Laudato Si” (his book on care of the poor, the environment, and ecology) and “Amoris Laetitia” (On Pastoral Care of Families). These works have not been without controversy, particularly “Amoris Laetitia,” which addressed providing the Sacraments to couples in “irregular” unions, leading to criticism from conservatives within the Church.
Despite the challenges faced by the DDF, Pope Francis expressed his confidence in Archbishop Fernández’s ability to lead the dicastery. He emphasized the importance of embracing diverse perspectives within the Church and fostering an environment where different lines of thought can coexist harmoniously.
Furthermore, the Pope reminded Archbishop Fernández of the primary purpose of the DDF, which is to guard the faith. He urged him not to be distracted by scandals and to focus on the main mission of the dicastery.
In addition to his role as Prefect of the DDF, Fernandez will also serve as the President of the Pontifical Biblical Commission and the President of the International Theological Commission.
With his extensive experience and close relationship with Pope Francis, Archbishop Fernández is poised to make a significant impact in his new position, ensuring that Catholic doctrine is upheld while embracing the evolving challenges of the modern world.
