US envoy for Iran on leave; security clearance under review.

U.S. Special Envoy for Iran Robert Malley on Leave Amid Security Clearance Review

Robert Malley, the U.S. Special Envoy for Iran, has recently been placed on leave as his security clearance undergoes review. This development has raised questions and concerns about his role in the ongoing negotiations.

Malley himself confirmed the situation, stating that he has been informed about the review but has not received any further details. However, he remains optimistic that the investigation will be resolved favorably and promptly. In the meantime, he is on leave.

The State Department spokesperson, Matthew Miller, confirmed Malley’s absence but did not provide a specific reason for it.

During Malley’s absence, Abram Paley has taken on the role of acting Special Envoy for Iran. He is now leading the department’s efforts in this crucial area.

Reports suggest that Malley’s leave may be related to allegations of mishandling classified information. Earlier this year, his access to such material was temporarily revoked, allowing him to continue working but without access to classified information.

Malley’s primary responsibility was to facilitate the United States’ reentry into the 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), commonly known as the Iran nuclear deal. Although the talks were suspended indefinitely last year, recent reports indicate that discussions have resumed through a third party.

In 2018, the United States withdrew from the JCPOA and reimposed sanctions on Iran, following a “maximum pressure” campaign initiated by the Trump administration.

Jason Brodsky, policy director at United Against Nuclear Iran, expressed concern about the situation but emphasized the need for all the facts to emerge before drawing conclusions. He called for Congress to engage in robust oversight of the Biden administration’s Iran policy, highlighting the lack of Iran-focused hearings by the House Foreign Affairs Committee since 2020.

Meanwhile, Representative Michael McCaul (R-Texas), the committee’s chairman, has sent a letter to Secretary of State Antony Blinken, seeking answers regarding Malley’s leave. The letter raises serious concerns and underscores the importance of transparency in this matter.
