AP Examines the Problematic Nature of the Word ‘Patriot’ on Independence Day

The Associated Press ignites the Independence Day celebrations with a thought-provoking article on the controversial nature of the word “patriot.”

In their piece, the outlet delves into how the term has become entangled in politics and has been adopted by extremist groups, transforming its meaning from love for the country to animosity towards certain minority groups.

“The term ‘patriot’ in America has become intertwined with political rhetoric and school curriculums, carrying diverse interpretations, while also being coopted by white nationalist groups,” the outlet tweeted, providing a link to the full article.

“Today, the word and its variants have evolved beyond their original meaning. It has become intertwined with political rhetoric and school curriculums, carrying diverse definitions, while being coopted by white nationalist groups,” the article alleges, citing data from the far-left Southern Poverty Law Center to support the claim that radical right-wing extremists have appropriated the word. “Defining what a patriot truly is depends on who you ask.”

Citing the Capitol Riot on January 6th, 2021, Louisiana State University historian Gaines Foster suggests that extremist groups are embracing a more revolutionary interpretation of the word, stating, “People are shifting away from a commitment to democracy and leaning more towards the idea in the Declaration of Independence that there is a ‘right of revolt,’ and that becomes patriotism.”

Critics were quick to point out the suspicious timing of the article, if not the subject matter itself.

“Just can’t help themselves,” Chad Felix Greene tweeted.

“AP can’t even take a break from dividing Americans on Independence Day. Pathetic,” another critic said.

AP desperately tries to malign the word ‘patriot’ on #4thofJuly. The only thing it does is remind us how much they hate the U.S. #Patriots,” Andy Martin responded.
