Mondaire Jones declares candidacy for former seat.
Former New York Rep. Mondaire Jones Announces Bid for Congressional Seat
Former New York Representative Mondaire Jones is making a comeback, running for his old congressional seat after losing reelection in the primary. Jones, an attorney, served in Congress for one term after being elected in 2020 to New York’s 17th Congressional District. Despite facing a crowded primary, he emerged victorious in the general election with a commanding lead of over 24 points.
Challenges and Determination
However, in 2022, due to redistricting and the decision by Sean Patrick Maloney, the former representative and chairman of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, to run in the 17th District, Jones decided to shift his focus to the 10th District. Unfortunately, he faced tough competition in a 13-way primary and lost.
Now, Jones is determined to reclaim his old seat, challenging the vulnerable freshman Republican who has become a top target for Democrats this election cycle. In his announcement video, Jones boldly declares, “I have never been Washington’s choice because I stand up to corruption. Most people in Washington didn’t grow up like me. They have no idea what it’s like to struggle. We need to get Washington back on the side of working people. I know we can do better. For me, this is personal.”
A Competitive Primary
In the upcoming primary, Jones will face Liz Gereghty, the sister of Governor Gretchen Whitmer (D-MI) and a former school board member within the 17th District. It promises to be a challenging race as both candidates vie for the opportunity to represent their party in the general election.
According to Federal Election Commission records, as of April, Jones has $50,123 in his campaign account, ready to fuel his bid for the congressional seat.
