‘Barbie’ director firmly rejects CGI for a specific scene: ‘It’s too scary’
Director Greta Gerwig Rejects CGI for Barbie’s Feet in Upcoming Movie
As fans eagerly await the premiere of Greta Gerwig’s highly anticipated “Barbie” movie, the director has revealed why she adamantly refused to use CGI for a crucial moment in the film.
The fantasy comedy, starring Margot Robbie, features a scene where Barbie takes off her shoes, revealing her iconic exaggerated arched foot, just like the plastic doll. Gerwig insisted that the high arch is completely real.
“There was a big discussion in the beginning,” Gerwig explained during an interview on the Australian talk show “The Project.” “Everyone said, ‘Are you going to CGI all the feet?’ And I thought, ‘Oh God, no! That’s terrifying! That’s a nightmare.'”
Gerwig also praised Robbie’s feet, describing them as “beautiful dancer feet.” She insisted that Robbie should perform the scene herself, holding onto a bar to achieve the dramatic arch.
Robbie herself discussed the challenging foot shots, revealing that she held onto a bar for stability while maintaining the exaggerated arch. “I really don’t like it when someone else does my hands or feet in an insert shot,” she explained. It took her eight takes to capture the perfect shot featured in the trailer.
For some of the more tedious foot shots, Robbie’s body double, Emma Eastwood, stepped in. Eastwood had to act as if her feet were in pain while walking up stairs and even lie facedown on the ground for an hour. She also revealed that plot details were kept secret from the actors until they were on set.
“They didn’t give me any details of what we would be doing. There were a couple of times they said the whole cast would be there and it would be an important day, but they never actually gave me any details of what we would be doing until I was on set,” Eastwood shared.
While many details about “Barbie” remain undisclosed, the basic plot revolves around Barbie and Ken (played by Ryan Gosling) enjoying their fantasy dream world until they have the opportunity to visit reality and interact with humans. The result is a hilarious and chaotic adventure as they navigate this new reality.
Don’t miss the premiere of “Barbie” in theaters on July 21!
