Xi Jinping gives alarming directives as senior US official arrives in mainland.
Chinese President Xi Jinping Calls for Advancement in Military Preparedness
Chinese President Xi Jinping has instructed the Chinese military to advance war planning and combat preparedness during his visit to the Eastern Theater Command’s headquarters. This comes as U.S. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen arrives in Beijing, according to state media.
During his inspection of the headquarters responsible for potential operations in Taiwan and the East China Sea, Xi emphasized the need to break new ground for theater command development and war preparedness, as reported by state-run Xinhua.
Xi highlighted the increasing uncertainty and instability in China’s security situation, necessitating the military to intensify training for war. This directive comes at a time when U.S. officials have been attempting to repair ties and address China’s perceived geopolitical threat.
The president, who is also the general secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee and chairman of the Central Military Commission, called for vigilance against potential dangers and all-out efforts to fulfill the responsibilities of the Eastern Theater Command.
Xi further emphasized the importance of enhancing war planning and combat, strengthening command and control, and increasing training under simulated combat conditions to enhance the forces’ capabilities to fight and win.
Previously, in April, Xi visited the Southern Theater Command headquarters, which oversees operations in the South China Sea, an area of frequent disputes and U.S. Navy transits.
Tensions between the U.S. and China have escalated in recent years due to trade disputes and China’s claim to sovereignty over Taiwan.
U.S. Treasury Secretary Yellen’s Visit
During her four-day tour of China, U.S. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen plans to meet with China’s Premier Li Qiang. Yellen will emphasize the U.S.’s opposition to complete economic separation from China while addressing China’s overreaching espionage law, according to Reuters.
Yellen expressed the desire for healthy economic competition that benefits American workers and firms and collaboration on global challenges.

Yellen’s visit aims to facilitate communication and avoid miscommunication or misunderstanding between the two nations. This trip follows Secretary of State Antony Blinken’s unsuccessful attempt to restore military-to-military communication lines during his meeting with Xi in June.
Climate Envoy John Kerry is also expected to visit China later this month, according to Reuters.
