Manhattan DA claims Eric Adams’ donors plotted to sway Mayor.
Campaign Donors Plot to Provide Illegal Donations to Mayor Adams
In a shocking revelation, indictments announced by Manhattan district attorney Alvin Bragg (D.) on Friday exposed a plot by campaign donors to New York City mayor Eric Adams (D.). These donors devised an elaborate scheme in 2020 and 2021 to provide illegal donations to Adams’ campaign while expecting favors from City Hall in return.
The defendants involved in this “very organized” scheme aimed to bypass campaign finance laws and funnel more money to the Adams campaign than legally allowed, as reported by Politico. They employed a straw-donor scheme, where individuals were paid to donate to the campaign on their behalf.
The ultimate goal was to leverage the illicitly obtained funds to secure favorable treatment from City Hall once Adams assumed office, according to Politico.
This is not the first time a straw-donor scheme has brought down a prominent New York Democrat. Just last year, former New York lieutenant governor Brian Benjamin resigned after being arrested for accepting straw donations. Although the most serious charges were dismissed, Benjamin still faces two counts of falsifying records, as reported by The New York Times.
While Bragg’s office has not charged Mayor Adams’ campaign, there are indications that Adams may have been aware of at least one of the fundraisers organized by the schemers, as revealed by Politico. Prior to these fundraisers, one defendant allegedly approached donors and shared information on how to circumvent contribution limits using the straw-donor scheme, as stated in Bragg’s announcement.
Adding to his troubles, The New York Times recently reported that Mayor Adams manipulated a Google printout of a murdered police officer, falsely claiming he had kept the photo in his wallet for decades.
