New book claims Trump’s mishandling of classified info: Report
A Former DHS Official Alleges Mishandling of Classified Information by Trump
A former Department of Homeland Security official, Miles Taylor, has made shocking allegations regarding the mishandling of classified information by former President Donald Trump. According to a report by NBC News, Taylor discusses these allegations in his new book, Blowback: A Warning to Save Democracy from the Next Trump, which is set to be released in mid-July.
Details of the Allegations
In his book, Taylor recounts an incident that took place on October 18, 2018, during a private meeting in the White House with John Bolton, Trump’s national security adviser at the time. According to Taylor, Sarah Huckabee Sanders, who was serving as Trump’s press secretary, entered Bolton’s office and discussed an interview that Trump had conducted in the Oval Office.
During this conversation, Trump allegedly revealed classified documents related to the death of journalist Jamal Khashoggi, who was murdered by Saudi government agents in Turkey in 2018. Sanders informed Bolton that Trump had displayed these documents to reporters, although it was unlikely that they could read the contents.
Taylor expresses his concern about the breach of protocol and the inadequate protection of classified information in his book, stating, “We were all disturbed by the lapse in protocol and poor protection of classified information.”
Trump’s Efforts to Prevent Leaks
Taylor’s book also sheds light on Trump’s attempts to prevent leaks from his administration. According to NBC, Trump desired to tap the phones of White House aides to avoid information reaching the press. This echoes previous reports that former White House press secretary Sean Spicer implemented random phone checks of staffers to prevent leaks.
In his own book, The Briefing, Spicer acknowledged the presence of leaks within Trump’s administration, with staffers resorting to using “burner phones” to avoid detection. Politico also reported that former White House chief of staff John Kelly approved a plan to remove certain mid-level and junior staffers from the communications team in an effort to reduce leaks.
Taylor’s Warnings and Trump’s Current Situation
Taylor has been vocal about his concerns regarding Trump’s reelection efforts and the potential consequences of another similar candidate taking office. In an article for Vanity Fair, he wrote, “If we elect another hyper-populist president, the shield will be turned into a political weapon.”
Currently, Trump is facing federal charges for retaining classified information found at his Florida estate after leaving the White House. Despite these charges, he remains the front-runner for the GOP in the 2024 presidential race.
In 2020, Taylor revealed himself as the author behind an anonymous op-ed in the New York Times in 2018, where he pledged to protect democratic institutions from the threats posed by Trump. He also published a book in November 2019 titled A Warning, which criticized Trump’s actions and policies.
