Texas Democrat Roland Gutierrez joins race to unseat Cruz.
Texas State Senator Roland Gutierrez Announces Candidacy to Challenge Incumbent Sen. Ted Cruz
Texas state Sen. Roland Gutierrez, a Democrat, has officially declared his candidacy to challenge incumbent Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) in the state’s 2024 U.S. Senate race.
Gutierrez, a representative of a district along the southern border that includes San Antonio and the community of Uvalde, is determined to make a difference following the tragic Robb Elementary School mass shooting in May 2022. This incident, where a lone gunman took the lives of 19 students and two teachers, and injured 17 others, has fueled Gutierrez’s campaign centered around gun control and the Republican party’s alleged inaction on the issue.
A Competitive Democratic Primary
The Texas Democratic U.S. Senate primary now features two candidates with strong name recognition: Gutierrez and Rep. Colin Allred (D-Texas). Allred, a former football star at Baylor University and a four-year NFL player, is also vying to become the first Democrat to win a statewide office seat in Texas in nearly three decades.
Ted Cruz’s Legacy
Sen. Ted Cruz, who has been a prominent conservative voice in American public life, is seeking his third term in the U.S. Senate. Cruz has consistently opposed the Obama and Biden administrations and successfully won reelection in 2018, defeating Rep. Beto O’Rourke (D-Texas) in a closely contested race.
“We welcome Senator Gutierrez to the race. Texans will now get to watch Colin Allred and Roland Gutierrez slug it out for who can be the most radical leftist in the state. Meanwhile, Sen. Cruz will continue passionately defending Texas and delivering real results for 30 million Texans.” – Nick Maddux, Cruz’s spokesman
A Native and Resident of San Antonio
Roland Gutierrez, the son of Mexican immigrants, has deep roots in San Antonio. He graduated from Central Catholic High School and went on to earn his bachelor’s degree in political science from the University of Texas at San Antonio, as well as his law degree from St. Mary’s University Law School. As a practicing immigration attorney, Gutierrez has dedicated his career to serving his community.
Gutierrez’s commitment to San Antonio is evident as he and his wife, Sarah, along with their daughters, Izabella and Victoria, call the city their home.
Gun Control: A Central Issue
Despite being a proud gun owner and supporter of the Second Amendment, Gutierrez has been advocating for changes in gun laws since the Robb Elementary School massacre. He believes that implementing measures such as raising the minimum age of gun ownership to 21 and establishing a database for bulk ammunition purchases will contribute to a safer society.
In a compelling campaign video, Gutierrez passionately expresses his dedication to making a difference.
