Mayra Flores, former GOP Rep., seeks to reclaim Congressional seat.
Republican Mayra Flores Announces Campaign to Retake U.S. House Seat
Former U.S. Representative Mayra Flores, who lost her seat in Texas last year, has declared her intention to run again.
In an interview on “Fox & Friends,” Flores revealed her campaign, stating her determination to reclaim what belongs to her. After winning her seat in a special election, she became the first Republican to represent the South Texas district in over 150 years. However, she lost it in the midterm elections held in November.
During her appearance on Fox News, Flores confidently declared, “We are taking back our seat, Texas District 34. I’m very excited, and I have a lot of faith in God, in my family, in my amazing team, that we will flip this district and take back what is ours in 2024.”
Flores, the wife of a border patrol agent, emphasized the importance of securing the border and combatting child trafficking in her campaign announcement. She also criticized the Biden administration for “losing track of 85,000 children,” referring to a report that revealed the Department of Health and Human Services had “lost touch” with a significant number of migrant children.
“This is for our children, for the future, for their parents, and also for these children that are being brought into the United States as well, to be trafficked,” Flores passionately expressed.
As the first Mexican-born U.S. congresswoman, Flores released a campaign ad on Twitter, highlighting her family’s roots in South Texas and the importance of family values. She tweeted, “I’m running to help restore the American Dream, secure our borders, and stand strong on our values of God, Family and Country.”
I am excited to announce that I am officially running for Congress in #TX34
We made history last year, but there’s still work to be done here in South Texas.

Challenging Incumbent Vicente Gonzalez
According to The Texas Tribune, the National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC) has been actively recruiting Flores to run against Democratic Representative Vicente Gonzalez, who currently holds the seat. In the November election, Gonzalez secured 52.7% of the vote, while Flores received 44.2%. The redistricting that occurred before the election played a significant role in Gonzalez’s victory.
Despite the district currently favoring Democrats by 9 points, an NRCC poll conducted in late May showed Flores tied with Gonzalez in a hypothetical matchup. The polling memo stated, “Mayra Flores has already proven she can win, and new polling shows she remains popular.”
