Pence: To Make Trump’s Ukraine Peace Talk Work, Give Putin What He Wants

Former Vice President Challenges Trump’s Claims on Ukraine War

Former Vice President Mike Pence has taken a stand against his former boss, disputing former President Donald Trump’s assertion that he could end the war in Ukraine within 24 hours. Pence argues that such a quick resolution would require the United States to concede to Russian President Vladimir Putin’s demands.

In an interview with Fox News, Pence expressed his belief that the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war can only be resolved by providing the necessary support for Ukraine to win. He countered Trump’s claims, stating, “The only way you’d solve this war in a day is if you gave Vladimir Putin what he wanted.”

Pence also raised concerns about the potential consequences of not supporting Ukraine. He warned that if Russia overruns Ukraine, it could lead to a broader conflict with NATO, potentially involving countries like Lithuania, Estonia, Latvia, and the Baltics. This would require the United States and other NATO members to fulfill their mutual defense obligations.

Mr. Pence’s stance aligns with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who recently suggested that NATO would be forced into a direct conflict with Russia if Ukraine fell. Zelenskyy questioned whether candidates who oppose supporting Ukraine are prepared to go to war and risk the safety of their own children.

During a surprise visit to Ukraine, Pence met with Zelenskyy to discuss the situation.

Pence also highlighted the importance of a strong military as a deterrent. He argued that Russia did not attack Ukraine during the Trump administration because the U.S. military was robust and the Trump administration made it clear that it was willing to use force if necessary.

While Trump has called for renewed peace negotiations, President Joe Biden has continued to support Ukraine by arming its forces. The Biden administration recently approved controversial cluster munitions for Ukraine.
