Dick Vitale Announces Battle with Vocal Cord Cancer

Dick Vitale, the legendary sports broadcaster, revealed on Wednesday that he is facing vocal cord cancer. The 84-year-old made the announcement on his social media platforms, assuring his followers that the cancer has a high cure rate. However, he will need six weeks of treatment to overcome it. This isn’t Vitale’s first encounter with cancer, as he has previously battled melanoma and lymphoma. Nevertheless, he remains determined to conquer this new challenge, just as he did before.

Fighting to Return for College Hoops Season

Vitale expressed his determination to be back in action for the upcoming college basketball season. He plans to fight with all his might to ensure he can call the games when the season kicks off in the Fall. His doctor shares his optimism, believing that Vitale will be ready in time. The sportscaster expressed his gratitude for the overwhelming support he has received through tweets, texts, notes, and prayers. He urged his well-wishers to continue sending positive vibes his way.

Gratitude for Family and Medical Experts

Vitale took a moment to thank his immediate family and his ESPN family for their unwavering support during this challenging time. He also expressed his appreciation for the exceptional team of medical experts who are guiding him through his treatment.

Early Thursday morning, Vitale shared a prayer posted by Tennessee basketball coach Rick Barnes. The prayer reminded him not to be anxious but to present his requests to God with thanksgiving.

Vitale’s previous battles with cancer occurred in recent years. He was diagnosed with lymphoma in October 2021 but announced his cancer-free status in August 2022. In August 2021, he revealed his fight against melanoma, which he successfully overcame through multiple surgeries.

Since ESPN’s inception in 1979, Vitale has been an integral part of the network. He even had the honor of calling their first-ever college basketball broadcast. His passion for the game and his iconic voice have made him a beloved figure in the world of sports broadcasting.
