Maryland SNAP recipients to receive last direct payment of up to $1,691 in nine days.

Final Payment for SNAP Recipients in Maryland

In just nine days, Maryland will be sending its final payment, worth up to $1,691, to Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) recipients for the month of July. This program, also known as food stamps, will continue to be distributed in Maryland until July 23. According to the state’s benefits schedule, food stamps are sent out from the 4th to the 23rd of every month.

Key Takeaways from FBI Director Wray’s Testimony

  • Approximately 772,700 people in Maryland, which makes up 13% of the state’s population, receive food stamps.
  • The average payment per household member per month is $180.
  • The maximum amount a recipient can receive in Maryland is $740 for a household of three and $1,691 for a household of eight.
  • For each additional member past eight, the program adds a maximum payment of $211.

SNAP benefits can be used for purchasing food and even plants and seeds to grow food for the household. Recipients receive benefits on an electronic benefit transfer card called the Independence Card, which allows them to buy eligible items at stores. However, benefits cannot be used for nonfood items, alcohol, medicines, tobacco, or hot foods that are ready to eat.

The availability of food stamps on the Independence Card depends on the first three letters of the recipient’s last name, varying from the 4th to the 23rd of the month.

The maximum annual income to be eligible for SNAP in Maryland depends on the household size. For example, the maximum annual income for a household of one is $18,954, while for a household of five, it is $45,682.

It’s important to note that SNAP benefits can be used for groceries but not for owed food bills or items that cannot be consumed.
