Trump seeks disqualification of Georgia DA from election interference probe.
Former President Donald Trump Seeks Court Intervention in Georgia Investigation
Former President Donald Trump has taken legal action to disqualify Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis from investigating him for election interference. He has also requested the rejection of a final report from a special purpose grand jury recommending indictments. Trump’s attorneys have made these pleas to both the Georgia Supreme Court and the Fulton County Superior Court.
Challenging the Status Quo
“Stranded between the supervising judge’s protracted passivity and the district attorney’s looming indictment, [Trump] has no meaningful option other than to seek this court’s intervention,”
According to a motion filed before Superior Court Judge Robert McBurney, the supervising judge of the special grand jury, Trump’s legal team argues that his only recourse is to request the court’s intervention. A similar motion was filed in March, but a ruling has not yet been issued.
The attorneys for the former president express their concern over the inaction on the March request, stating that it should be shocking. They emphasize that the delays and anomalies in the process are likely due to Trump’s status as President Donald J. Trump.
Willis’s Investigation and Grand Jury Findings
Willis initiated her investigation after a phone call between Trump and Republican Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger surfaced. In the call, Trump urged Raffensperger to “find 11,780 votes,” the number needed to overturn Joe Biden’s victory in the state.
Over a span of six months, a special purpose grand jury conducted interviews with 75 witnesses and produced a final report with recommendations for indictments. The foreperson of the grand jury suggested in subsequent media interviews that multiple indictments were recommended.
Continued Legal Battle
Recently, Willis notified local court officials and law enforcement that she intends to seek an indictment between July 31 and Aug. 8. In response, Trump’s attorneys have taken action to challenge her authority and the grand jury’s findings.
The legal battle over the investigation into Trump’s alleged election interference continues, with both sides presenting their arguments to the courts.
