GOP Docs Reveal Moment Experts Suspected COVID Lab Leak, But Took Different Action
Scientists Concealed Belief in Lab Leak Theory Despite Evidence, Newly Released Documents Show
In a shocking revelation, it has come to light that scientific experts in 2020 privately acknowledged the theory of COVID-19 being leaked from a lab in Wuhan as “very likely,” contradicting the public narrative they promoted. The evidence of their true beliefs was accidentally released by House Republicans investigating the origins of the pandemic.
The key document in question is the “Proximal Origin of SARS-CoV-2” paper, signed by a group of scientists in 2020, which played a significant role in shaping the prevailing belief that the virus originated in a Chinese wet market rather than a lab. However, the newly exposed emails and Slack messages reveal that the authors of the paper held the opposite view.
The released documents, which include cropped emails and Slack messages, provide a glimpse into the scientists’ real-time thinking in 2020. These messages expose the true motive behind the “Proximal Origin” paper.
Interestingly, the House Republicans’ report, which contained the cropped set of emails and messages, was initially drafted as a Word document and later converted into a PDF. Due to a technical oversight, the uncropped images were retained in the PDF, allowing The Intercept to restore the emails and Slack messages to their original format.

The House Republicans’ hearing on the “Proximal Origin” paper revealed that Dr. Anthony Fauci and Francis Collins, then-head of the National Institutes of Health, had made calls in February 2020. Coincidentally, the authors of the paper had just completed their first draft, which contradicted their true beliefs. During the hearing, the authors claimed to have “changed their minds” due to new data, but the emails and Slack messages tell a different story.
One of the authors, Kristian Andersen, expressed his belief in a February 2020 Slack message that the virus could have leaked from a lab rather than emerging naturally from a wet market. However, his colleague Andrew Rambaut discouraged speculation, stating that without irrefutable evidence, the truth would never come out. Despite this, Rambaut suggested laying out the arguments for limited dissemination and learning from them.
After completing their first draft, Andersen responded to colleagues who wanted to eliminate the lab leak theory from the paper, stating that accidental escape from a lab was highly likely and not a fringe theory. However, the authors ultimately released a paper that argued against the lab leak theory, contributing to the labeling of it as a “conspiracy theory” and even racist.
The newly released documents provide a rare glimpse into the behind-the-scenes discussions among scientists and raise questions about the transparency and integrity of the scientific community. The full extent of the cover-up and its implications are yet to be fully understood.
