Alaska coast earthquake prompts tsunami advisory, residents seek shelter.
A 7.2 Magnitude Earthquake Triggers Tsunami Advisory in Southern Alaska
A powerful 7.2 magnitude earthquake struck southern Alaska late Saturday, causing a brief tsunami advisory that sent residents into a state of alert. However, the advisory was later canceled, bringing relief to the affected areas.
The earthquake, which originated 106 kilometers south of Sand Point, Alaska, was felt across the Aleutian Islands, the Alaskan Peninsula, and Cook Inlet regions. Videos posted on social media showed sirens blaring in Kodiak, Alaska, warning residents of a potential tsunami.
The United States Geological Survey initially reported the earthquake as a 7.4 magnitude but later downgraded it to 7.2. The U.S. National Weather Service issued a tsunami advisory, stating that the quake occurred at a depth of 13 miles. However, the advisory was canceled within an hour of its issuance.
Impacts and Aftermath
While the tsunami advisory covered coastal Alaska from Chignik Bay to Unimak Pass, Kodiak Island and the Kenai Peninsula were not expected to be affected, according to the National Weather Service in Anchorage. The Hawaii Emergency Management Agency also confirmed that there was no threat to the islands.
Following the earthquake, there were several aftershocks in the same area, including one measuring 5.0 magnitude. Local emergency officials advised residents not to reoccupy hazard zones without proper clearance.
Although small sea level changes were still possible, the situation quickly returned to normal. Alaska, being the most seismically active state in the U.S., experiences numerous earthquakes each year. In fact, it is home to the second-largest earthquake ever recorded, a magnitude 9.2 quake in 1964.
The recent earthquake occurred in the same region as several other significant earthquakes in the past few years, according to the Alaska Earthquake Center. In a tweet, the center noted that the once quiet “Shumagin Gap” is no longer quiet.
