Rep. Jamie Raskin: Trump’s 2024 Candidacy as a Shield Against Prosecution
During an interview on Inside with Jen Psaki Sunday, Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-MD) expressed his belief that former President Donald Trump is using his potential candidacy for the 2024 presidential election as a means to protect himself from prosecution in his federal case involving classified documents.
“I certainly believe that he’s trying to use his candidacy and his campaign as a shield against legal prosecution,” Raskin stated.
Raskin acknowledged the unprecedented nature of the situation, stating, “because nobody’s ever pushed the limits like this before,” it is difficult to predict the outcome of the case.
Last month, Trump was indicted on 37 felony charges, including 31 counts of willful retention of national defense information. He pleaded not guilty to these charges.
In an attempt to delay the trial, Trump’s lawyers, along with long-time aide Walt Nauta, argued that holding the trial during a presidential election would impact both the election outcome and the defendants’ ability to receive a fair trial. However, the Justice Department urged Judge Aileen Cannon to proceed with jury selection, dismissing the request for a delay. Special counsel Jack Smith requested that the trial begin on Dec. 11, prior to the Republican presidential primaries and the 2024 general election.
“No president has ever been in a situation where he’s had to think about pardoning himself, much less essentially promising to pardon himself,” Raskin commented.
Raskin emphasized that Trump’s actions are pushing the legal system to its limits, forcing the evaluation of radical concepts that have never been tested before. However, Raskin also noted that there is a strong argument against a president’s ability to pardon himself.
