A tragic incident unfolded in Modesto, California, last week, where a 27-year-old homeless mother lost her life after being run over by a lawnmower. The family of the victim claims that investigators left “chunks” of her body scattered across the grass.
Christine Chavez, a homeless mother, was sleeping in Beard Brook Park on July 8th when a John Deere tractor with a pull-behind mower passed through the area, tragically ending her life.
According to the Modesto Bee, Chavez had been living as a transient for the past three to four years and often camped in the park. The park had recently been purchased by E&J Gallo Winery, just a day before the incident.
The landscaper operating the mower claims that he did not see the sleeping woman until he had already passed through the area, as per Modesto police.
Chavez was pronounced dead at the scene after the worker contacted 9-1-1.
The family of the victim expressed their anguish over the negligent and sloppy clean-up, which only added to their pain.
“They left big chunks of her all over the place, just covered up with the grass,” the victim’s sister Rosalinda told the press.
“We have to go see the place because we wanted some kind of closure, and to be right there, looking at the ground, and then all of a sudden, seeing chunks of her, is horrible.”
“Even when they go and pick up a dog from the street, they take more time.”
Christopher Chavez, the victim’s father, revealed that he was able to collect fragments of his daughter’s bones, skull, and teeth in the days following her tragic death.
The family believes that her remains were mishandled due to her homelessness, suggesting that investigators may not have viewed her as a valued member of society.
Prior to the change in ownership, the 12-acre park served as a popular camping ground for the homeless in the area.
Other homeless individuals who spoke to the press mentioned seeing Chavez washing her hair in the park’s creek before finding a spot to sleep near the playground and baseball field.
The lawnmower arrived approximately twenty minutes later.
Now, Chavez’s family is demanding justice for her untimely death and advocating for stricter local legislation to protect homeless individuals.
“She didn’t deserve that for that reason—for being homeless,” said her brother, Randy Chavez, 33. “My sister was loved. The only thing she wanted was to be free.”
“We want ordinances to change so it doesn’t happen again. Regardless if they are homeless, they are still people and should be treated the same as any other people.”
Esmerelda Chavez, the victim’s sister, has joined forces with the rest of the family to create a GoFundMe page to raise funds for a lawyer to handle the case.
