Trump praises RFK Jr as ‘very intelligent’ despite controversial COVID comment.
Former President Donald Trump Praises Robert Kennedy Jr. as a “Very Smart Person”
Former President Donald Trump has lauded 2024 Democratic candidate Robert Kennedy Jr. as a brilliant individual, following Kennedy’s recent controversial statement about the COVID-19 pandemic.
Kennedy’s Controversial Theory
During a question-and-answer session at a New York restaurant on the Upper East Side, RFK Jr. shared his intriguing idea about COVID-19, biological weapons, and China’s involvement. He theorized that the coronavirus was intentionally designed to spare certain groups, including Jews and Chinese people.
Trump’s Praise for Kennedy
During a Sunday interview with Fox News, Trump expressed his admiration for Kennedy, stating, ”He’s a very smart person. I know many members of that family, and he’s a very intelligent guy. He has struck a nerve, and I know many Democrats who want to vote for him.”
Kennedy is currently running in the Democratic primary race for the 2024 presidential election and is considered President Joe Biden’s strongest challenger. When asked about Kennedy’s chances against Biden, Trump expressed doubt that Kennedy would even have the opportunity to debate the president.
Trump’s Doubts about Kennedy’s Nomination
“Firstly, Biden is incapable of debating him,” Trump asserted. “Secondly, why would he debate him when he probably has the nomination secured? I don’t see RFK Jr. getting the nomination under any circumstances.”

Public Opinion on Kennedy and Other Candidates
A recent poll conducted by the Economist-YouGov revealed that 49% of respondents held a favorable view of Kennedy, while only 30% viewed him unfavorably. This net favorability of 19 points makes him the most well-regarded among all 2024 presidential candidates. In contrast, former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie received a net favorability of negative 24 points, with 51% viewing him unfavorably and only 27% favorably.
Another poll conducted from July 8-11 showed that 61% of voters believe Biden is not the strongest candidate the Democrats could nominate, while 53% believe the same about Trump for the Republicans in 2024. Among the most skeptical were Trump 2020 voters, with 84% doubting Biden’s strength as a candidate, and Biden 2020 voters, with 76% skeptical of Trump’s viability.
