DeSantis proposes altering retirement eligibility for Social Security.
Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis Supports Changes to Social Security for Millennials
Republican presidential contender and Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) believes in making changes to Social Security for millennials and younger generations. However, he emphasizes the importance of protecting current seniors from any alterations to the program.
During his time in the House of Representatives, DeSantis advocated for raising the retirement age to 70 and privatizing the program. Despite this, he assures that he will prioritize the well-being of seniors.
“I’ve always said, ‘Promise made, promise kept.’ I’m a governor of Florida. Of course, we’re going to protect people’s Social Security,” the governor said on Fox News. “My grandmother passed away when she was 91. That was her sole source of income. And that’s true for millions of seniors. … So when people say that we’re gonna somehow cut seniors, that is totally not true.”
DeSantis acknowledges the need for discussions on making changes for individuals in their 30s and 40s to ensure the program’s viability. Experts have warned that without any adjustments, the trust fund for Social Security will be depleted by 2034. While this depletion would not halt benefit payments, it would reduce the amount received by recipients.
AARP predicts that if the trust fund is depleted, the program would only be able to pay approximately ”80% of the benefits to which retired and disabled workers are entitled.”
The current retirement age in the United States is 67, but individuals can choose to retire early at 62 or delay retirement until 70 to receive higher benefits.
