The United States ⁤must end‌ its⁤ “crackdown” on‍ China⁣ or⁤ risk losing cooperation on ⁤climate ⁤change, warns the Chinese ‌Communist ‌Party’s flagship‌ newspaper. This‌ comes as ‌Biden ⁢administration climate‌ envoy John ⁣Kerry visits ⁢China ‍to address‌ the climate ⁢crisis.

 ‍

The government-run⁤ propaganda ‌publication, Global Times,⁤ criticizes the ongoing U.S.‌ crackdown on China’s ⁤technological ‌development. ‍It emphasizes ‌that⁤ without ⁤resolving past⁣ frictions, cooperation on climate change⁢ is unlikely.

According to ⁣Global Times’ ⁤editorial, “If ⁤the ‌U.S. ‍continues‍ its⁢ crackdown on China, escalating tensions‍ and hostility between the two sides, it is unlikely to be‍ conducive to any kind of cooperation, including‍ on climate ⁢change. While Washington‍ has⁤ long ⁤wanted to ‍isolate⁣ climate change issues from ‌its‌ other political and trade ⁢policies related ‌to ‌China, ‌there is⁣ actually no‌ way to⁢ separate‍ bilateral ‌cooperation ⁣on ⁢global warming‍ from‌ the⁢ broader context of China-U.S.⁣ relations.”

Kerry, serving as‍ President Joe ⁣Biden’s⁢ climate czar,‌ commends ‍China for⁢ its remarkable progress ⁢in renewable energy ⁤development and urges both countries to put‌ aside political issues‍ and work⁤ together to‍ combat climate change. However, ‌these comments have⁢ drawn criticism, with GOP presidential candidate Nikki Haley suggesting‍ that⁢ Kerry’s approach prioritizes‍ climate change ⁤over other ⁢pressing⁣ concerns.

Kerry’s visit ⁣to⁢ China follows Treasury Secretary Janet ‍Yellen’s recent talks⁤ with China’s top economic officials, during which Yellen softened⁣ language⁣ that had angered‌ the CCP. Yellen ⁤emphasized the importance of diverse supply chains, aiming to⁤ alleviate ⁣China’s concerns.

Kerry ⁢has expressed regret⁣ that climate change has ⁣become ‍entangled ⁤with other tensions between⁣ the U.S.⁤ and China. He⁣ hopes ‍that his‍ trip will encourage ⁢China to reduce its coal consumption, as ⁤it currently surpasses the ⁤rest⁣ of the world‍ combined in‍ coal burning⁢ and carbon emissions.‌ However, China has previously‍ made pledges to‌ limit coal consumption but has⁤ continued ‍to‍ build new coal plants.

‌

‍ ⁣

In ⁤2014, ⁤China ⁤pledged ‍to⁢ cap its‌ annual coal consumption ‍at ‍4.2⁢ billion‌ tons ⁣by 2020. However, in 2021, ⁢China⁢ consumed⁢ over⁢ 5.24 billion tons ⁤of⁢ coal, ⁢exceeding ⁤its own target.⁢ Despite this, Kerry‌ has cited Chinese President Xi’s acknowledgment ⁤of the “climate ⁤crisis”⁤ as a sign of progress.
