DeSantis changes direction in campaign’s new phase.
Republican Candidate Ron DeSantis Takes on the Media
Republican presidential candidate Ron DeSantis is shaking things up and getting ready to face the hostile legacy media head-on. It seems that his campaign is entering a new phase, as his poll numbers have remained stagnant since he joined the race in May.
The 44-year-old Florida governor is set to appear in a special one-on-one interview with CNN’s Jake Tapper this week, marking a significant shift from his previous stance of ignoring interview requests from liberal outlets. In addition, the campaign recently let go of around 10 staffers involved in event planning, according to a reliable source.
While some reports suggest that these staff cuts indicate financial difficulties, DeSantis actually raised more money in the first quarter through his principal campaign committee than any other candidate, including former President Donald Trump and President Joe Biden. With $12.2 million in cash on hand, his campaign ranks third among Republican candidates.
Backing DeSantis is the Super PAC Never Back Down, which plays a crucial role in his White House aspirations. With a staggering $120 million in cash and an expected $200 million in its primary fight, this Super PAC is leaving no stone unturned. The New York Times even described their efforts as “so big” that they plan to reach out to every possible DeSantis voter multiple times in key states like New Hampshire, Nevada, South Carolina, and Iowa.
After the November midterms, DeSantis emerged as the frontrunner in some national and state polls. His re-election as Florida governor with a 19-point victory set him apart from other underperforming Republican candidates across the country. However, Trump has since regained his lead in the polls, especially after facing numerous felony charges brought against him by Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg. Trump’s Super PAC has also spent over $20 million on ads attacking DeSantis, surpassing the amount spent on all the Republican candidates it supported in the midterms combined.
Despite these challenges, the DeSantis campaign remains optimistic. They believe that the upcoming primary debates will be a turning point, expecting the polls to shift in their favor. Interestingly, Trump has indicated that he will not participate in these debates.
