DeSantis: Trump should’ve been stronger on Jan. 6 Capitol riot.

Gov. Ron⁣ DeSantis Criticizes ⁢the⁤ Criminalization of Politics

Gov. Ron DeSantis⁤ (R-FL) recently spoke out‌ against the growing trend of criminalizing⁣ politics,‍ while addressing questions about the‍ possibility of former President Donald Trump ‍facing a second federal⁢ indictment.

During a press conference on ‌Tuesday,⁣ DeSantis revealed that⁢ he had been informed ⁤about Trump ‌receiving ‌a target letter ⁢from ⁢Jack Smith, who is involved in the special counsel’s⁣ investigation into the Jan.⁤ 6 attack ⁣on the Capitol. However, he admitted that he had not yet been⁣ fully briefed‌ on‍ the details ⁢of this development.

Protecting‌ the⁣ Integrity of⁣ Political⁤ Differences

DeSantis‌ expressed his ‌concerns about the dangerous ‌path‍ of criminalizing ⁢political differences, ⁣stating, “What we’ve seen in this⁣ country is an attempt to criminalize politics ‍and to try to ‌criminalize⁢ differences.” ‌He went on to ⁣highlight the politicization of‍ institutions⁤ like ⁤the ‍FBI and⁢ the Department of Justice, emphasizing how⁤ they ⁢have been ⁢weaponized against‍ American citizens.

DeSantis also ⁣mentioned ‌his frustration with the perceived bias in the treatment⁣ of Hunter Biden,‌ stating that “he ⁣would have⁤ been in jail if he ⁣were Republican.” While ⁣acknowledging ⁤his concerns about the country’s⁤ institutions, he did‍ admit‌ that Trump should⁣ have taken ⁤a ‌stronger stance during the ‍Jan. ⁢6 riot.

A ⁤Call⁤ for‍ Fairness and Unity

DeSantis emphasized the⁤ importance of distinguishing ⁤between criminal charges⁣ and political actions, stating, “There’s a difference between being brought up⁢ on ‍criminal ⁢charges ⁢and doing things ⁢like, for example, ⁢I think⁣ was shown how he was in the White⁤ House and didn’t do anything while things were⁤ going‌ on.” ⁤He⁣ urged for⁢ a ⁤fair‌ and‍ balanced ⁢approach, where one side does not constantly seek to imprison ⁣the ⁣other.

Trump himself confirmed earlier ⁣on‍ Tuesday that he was the ⁣target⁢ of Jack‍ Smith’s investigation‌ into the ‍events of⁣ Jan. 6.⁢ He ‌described the special counsel as “deranged” and revealed that he had ⁢been‌ given four ‌days to provide grand⁣ jury⁢ testimony if‌ he ⁤chose to ‌do so.

It remains to ‍be⁤ seen how‌ this situation ⁤will unfold, but DeSantis’ remarks shed light ⁢on the broader issue ⁤of criminalizing ⁤politics and⁣ the ‌need for⁤ unity in our⁣ nation.
