GOP lawmaker threatens to halt House action unless more spending cuts are made.
Rep. Victoria Spartz Threatens to Stall Legislative Action in House
Rep. Victoria Spartz (R-IN) is taking a stand against excessive spending in Congress, and she’s not afraid to make her voice heard. In a letter addressed to Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA), Spartz vows to oppose all GOP-led rules votes until McCarthy addresses unauthorized and automatic spending by the federal government.
Spartz’s demands come at a crucial time as the House prepares to vote on appropriations bills. If more Republicans join her in pushing for spending cuts, it could cause delays in passing the legislation before the September deadline.
A Call for Fiscal Responsibility
In her letter, Spartz expresses her dissatisfaction with the lack of leadership in dealing with the fiscal state of the nation. She emphasizes that Congress has abandoned its duty to oversee spending, which is crucial for the American people.
Spartz points out three areas where McCarthy must make changes, accusing him of breaking promises made before becoming House leader. One of these promises was to crack down on unauthorized spending, which accounts for a significant portion of government spending and lacks proper oversight.
Republicans had proposed eliminating waivers for unauthorized spending, but McCarthy rejected the idea, suggesting it be handled at the committee level. However, no progress has been made on this front, according to Spartz.
Despite the criticism from Democratic leaders, who accuse Republicans of advancing their own “extreme agenda,” Spartz remains firm in her stance. She joins other conservatives in demanding increased spending cuts as part of appropriations negotiations.
Confidence in Passing Appropriations Bills
While Spartz and other conservatives push for spending cuts, Speaker McCarthy remains confident that the House can pass all 12 appropriations bills before the September 30 deadline. The House Appropriations Committee has already approved eight of the 12 spending bills, setting the stage for a vote by the full chamber.
McCarthy dismisses concerns about potential delays caused by conservatives, stating that the most important thing is not the Freedom Caucus but the well-being of America.
It remains to be seen how this intraparty showdown will unfold, but one thing is clear: Rep. Victoria Spartz is determined to bring fiscal responsibility back to Congress.
