Manchin initially ignored worries over gas bans, now seeks recognition for halting them.
West Virginia Democrat in 2021 opposed a measure aimed at banning natural gas in buildings
With a difficult reelection year approaching, West Virginia’s Sen. Joe Manchin is making headlines by championing a measure to block gas stove bans. However, it’s worth noting that just last year, Manchin opposed a similar measure, expressing doubt that natural gas bans would ever come to fruition.
Manchin recently released a video where he proudly announced his efforts to secure various priorities for West Virginia, including a measure to prohibit the Biden administration from banning gas stoves. However, just two years ago, Manchin opposed an amendment that aimed to prevent federal funds from being used to ban the use of natural gas in residential and commercial buildings. At the time, Manchin didn’t see the need for such a measure.
“I would be as concerned as Senator Barrasso if I thought that would happen,” Manchin stated during a Senate Energy Committee meeting in July 2021. ”I don’t see that happening.” However, other Democrats disagreed, with some arguing that a shift towards electrification would bring energy savings.
This isn’t the first time Manchin has changed his stance on energy policy as an election year approaches. In May, he criticized the Biden administration for not promoting offshore oil and gas development, despite previously voting against a measure that would have required more offshore lease sales. Manchin’s political future remains uncertain, with speculation about a potential third-party presidential bid. However, his Senate colleagues are urging him to run for reelection, although it’s expected to be a challenging campaign.
Regardless of his future plans, Manchin has recently positioned himself as a critic of President Biden’s spending, particularly regarding the trillion-dollar Inflation Reduction Act. However, it’s worth noting that Manchin himself played a significant role in shaping and supporting the bill just a few months ago.
In addition to the controversy surrounding gas stove bans, the Biden administration has moved forward with plans to restrict gas stove sales. The Energy Department argues that these measures are necessary to address the global climate crisis. However, industry leaders and an Energy Department analysis suggest that a significant portion of gas stoves on the market would be affected by these restrictions.
Manchin has a history of changing his positions as elections approach. In the past, he has reversed his stance on issues like border walls. As the political landscape evolves, it remains to be seen how Manchin’s positions will continue to shift.
