Colorado teen arrested for planning to join ISIS in the US.
Colorado Teen Arrested for Attempting to Join ISIS
A shocking incident unfolded at Denver International Airport on Friday when a Colorado teen was apprehended while trying to board an international flight. The 18-year-old, identified as Davin Daniel Meyer, was arrested for “attempting to provide material support to a designated foreign terrorist organization.”
The Justice Department revealed that Meyer had “pledged an oath of allegiance to the leader of ISIS and intended to travel to serve as a fighter for ISIS in Iraq.” This information was provided in an affidavit supporting the charges.
According to the criminal complaint, the FBI was alerted by an individual who noticed Meyer’s transformation into a radicalized individual with “extremist videos and content online and openly discussed his violent intentions.” Meyer had been communicating his travel plans with an FBI informant whom he believed to be an ISIS facilitator.
Unfortunately, this is not the first time Americans have been arrested for attempting to join ISIS. In 2016, a Mississippi couple was convicted of similar charges, disguising their trip abroad as a honeymoon. In 2017, a New York man was arrested for supporting ISIS, and in 2018, a U.S. soldier pleaded guilty to providing classified documents to the terrorist group.
Although ISIS has lost most of its territory in the Middle East, there are still active cells of the terrorist group in the region. Just last year, a conflict erupted at a Syrian prison when ISIS terrorists attempted to free their fellow militants but were ultimately defeated by a Syrian militia.
The FBI Denver Field Office is currently investigating Meyer’s case, and an assistant U.S. attorney from the Colorado district is handling the prosecution.
