Deadline extended for households to apply for free air conditioning unit under LIHEAP utility payments.
Pennsylvania Expands Cooling Assistance Program for Low-Income Homes
Pennsylvania is taking steps to ensure that low-income households stay cool this summer by expanding its state’s pilot program for cooling homes through the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP).
This marks the second consecutive summer that the state will allocate funds from LIHEAP to assist homes with air conditioning units. The program covers not only the installation expenses but also the repair or replacement costs. In fact, depending on the results of a household audit, some homeowners may even qualify for a free air conditioning unit.
Extended Deadline for LIHEAP Crisis Cooling Pilot
While the regular LIHEAP season closed in May, state officials have extended the deadline for the LIHEAP Crisis Cooling Pilot. Originally set to end in May, the pilot program will now close on August 31.
To be eligible for the program, residents must have already qualified for LIHEAP or received money from the Weatherization Assistance Program within the past 12 months. These programs are part of the state’s recently passed $45.5 billion budget.
Interested Pennsylvanians must be living at 150% or 200% of the federal poverty level. The program prioritizes high-risk residents, such as families with children, the elderly, disabled individuals, or households with high energy needs.
According to the state Department of Community and Economic Development, over 2,000 households received aid through the pilot program last summer.
If you are interested in finding out if you are based in a qualified area, please contact the Energy Coordinating Agency and Philadelphia Housing Development Corporation or visit a local Neighborhood Energy Center to apply.
