Stanford President steps down due to manipulated research.
Stanford University President Resigns Amidst Manipulated Data Scandal
Stanford University’s president, Marc Tessier-Lavigne, is stepping down following an internal report that revealed his failure to promptly correct five papers containing manipulated data.
The university initiated an investigation into Tessier-Lavigne after allegations arose regarding the manipulation of data in some of his papers. While stanford.edu/wp-content/uploads/sites/5/2023/07/Scientific-Panel-Final-Report.pdf” target=”_blank” rel=”noopener”>the report did not find evidence of Tessier-Lavigne’s direct involvement in the manipulation, it criticized his failure to correct the scientific record when given the opportunity on multiple occasions.
This scandal has posed a significant challenge to Stanford under Tessier-Lavigne’s leadership. In one incident, law school students violated the university’s free speech policies by disrupting a talk by a conservative federal judge. The Washington Free Beacon reported that diversity dean Tirien Steinbach supported the students, accusing the judge of causing harm.
In response, Tessier-Lavigne and law school dean Jenny Martinez issued a formal apology to the judge and placed Steinbach on leave.
Furthermore, Martinez announced mandatory free speech training for students. However, an investigation by the Free Beacon revealed that the training was ineffective, requiring minimal effort and allowing students to easily ignore or skip the required videos.
Tessier-Lavigne has also decided to retract or provide extensive corrections for several of his peer-reviewed articles. According to the Daily, retractions are extremely rare in academia, occurring in only 0.04 percent of research papers. Retractions typically happen when “clear evidence” emerges that the findings are unreliable.
The report also revealed that Tessier-Lavigne had a tendency to reward lab workers who provided favorable results while punishing those who struggled to generate such data.
Interestingly, another professor at an elite university faced similar accusations recently. A Chronicle of Higher Education report credibly accused a Harvard professor, who specializes in studying honesty, of using fraudulent data in her research.
