VIDEO: Homeless Man Assaults Santa Monica Councilman Over Littering Request
An Unsettling Incident: Homeless Man Attacks Santa Monica City Councilman
The tranquility of a bustling local shopping area in Santa Monica was shattered on Sunday when an apparently homeless man launched a violent attack on city councilman Phil Brock. The shocking incident, captured on video, unfolded as Brock approached the man, who was tearing down signs on a store. Brock’s intention was simply to request that the man dispose of the refuse properly. However, the encounter quickly escalated as the assailant shoved Brock, hurled obscenities, snatched his hat, and doused both Brock and his girlfriend with an unidentified liquid.
The attacker, identified as Sawyer Walden Allee, now faces charges of battery and grand theft. Remarkably, this marks his third felony arrest in less than three weeks. Allee had been released from Los Angeles County jail on two previous occasions, despite facing felony charges. The incident has left Brock and his girlfriend shaken, with Brock recounting the harrowing experience to KTLA: “I turned to walk away. He took a bottle of some sort of liquid and threw it on me. Made a second throw and doused Kathryn [Brock’s girlfriend] as well. We called 911.”
Brock, who passionately advocates for increased police presence and the enforcement of misdemeanors, acknowledges that Santa Monica, like many other cities across California, is grappling with a homelessness problem that plagues its streets. Unfortunately, the state’s rising crime rates are further exacerbating the situation. Democratic state leaders have been pushing for sentencing leniency and prison releases, contributing to the alarming surge in criminal activities.
“L.A. is finished,” declared rapper Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson earlier this month, expressing his dismay after Los Angeles County reinstated a zero-bail policy for nonviolent felony charges. Santa Monica, located within the county, has witnessed an alarming 11 percent increase in its crime rate in 2022.
Meanwhile, San Francisco has been grappling with its own set of challenges. Homicides in the city have surged by nearly 40 percent from 2020 to 2022, and deaths from fentanyl have spiked. The city experienced a staggering population decrease of over 50,000 residents last year, the highest among major U.S. cities.
