Sen. Graham warns that Democrats’ Supreme Court Ethics Bill could devastate the Court.

Republicans Prepare for Battle Over Supreme Court⁢ Regulation Bill

“Tomorrow will be one hell of a fight,”⁤ Sen. Lindsey Graham‍ (R-S.C.) said at ⁢a late afternoon press conference in ‍the ⁤U.S. Capitol on July 19.

‍

“The effort by‍ the Left ⁢to‍ destroy the Court in ‍the eyes ⁢of ‍the public is one of the ‍most dangerous things I’ve⁤ seen since I’ve ‌been here.”

Sen. ⁣Graham’s strong words set⁢ the⁣ stage ‌for a ⁣heated showdown ⁢as ‍the Senate‍ Judiciary⁤ Committee prepares⁤ to vote on the proposed Supreme Court Ethics, Recusal, and ‍Transparency‌ Act ‍(SCERT) of⁤ 2023 (S.359).⁣ Introduced by Sen. Sheldon ⁤Whitehouse (D-R.I.), the bill aims‍ to⁣ establish a code of conduct for ‌Supreme Court⁤ justices and allow the‍ public to file complaints against them for violating the code or engaging in conduct that ⁤undermines the⁢ Court’s‍ integrity.

Republicans argue that this complaint mechanism is a deliberate attempt⁤ to‌ hinder the‍ Court’s functioning.⁤ They are determined to ⁢protect the⁢ constitutional ⁤separation ⁣of powers and prevent the Supreme Court⁣ from‌ being‍ destroyed.

⁤ ‍

Democrats, on the⁣ other hand, have been demanding a ⁢code⁣ of ‍ethics ⁣for‍ the Court due to alleged ‌ethical lapses by conservative ⁣justices, such as ⁣Justice ‍Clarence Thomas ⁤and Justice Samuel Alito. ‌They are particularly outraged by the revelations ⁢of wealthy ‌Republican‌ donor Harlan Crow’s gifts ⁣to Justice Thomas ‌and Justice⁣ Alito’s‌ failure to disclose a‌ paid trip.

While Democrats have been less vocal⁢ about similar allegations against liberal Justice Sonia Sotomayor, the‌ focus remains on the need for transparency‍ and accountability within the highest court ‍in the ‌land.

Sen. Durbin Stresses the Importance of the ‍Bill

Hours⁤ before Sen. Graham’s press‌ conference, Senate Judiciary⁣ Committee⁤ chairman Dick Durbin (D-Ill.)⁣ emphasized the significance of⁤ passing ‍the bill.

⁤ ‌ ⁣

“Just about every week now, we‌ learn something new and deeply⁣ troubling about the justices serving on the Supreme Court—the highest court ‍in the⁢ land in the United States—and their conduct outside the courtroom,”⁢ Mr. Durbin said.

“Let me ‌tell ⁢you, if I or‌ any member ⁣of the‌ Senate failed to report…
