Gun control activist claims responsibility for censorship of ‘Try That In A Small Town’.
A Prominent Gun Control Activist Takes Credit for CMT Removing ”Try That In A Small Town”
A well-known gun control activist, Shannon Watts, has proudly claimed responsibility on social media for Country Music Television’s decision to remove the song “Try That In A Small Town” from its network. Watts, the founder of Moms Demand Action, a grassroots movement advocating for public safety measures against gun violence, expressed her satisfaction on Tuesday night, stating that she played a part in having CMT eliminate what she deemed a ”racist and violent song” from its rotation.
Challenging Jason Aldean’s Fundraiser
Furthermore, Watts took issue with country artist Jason Aldean, who performed “Try That In A Small Town,” being scheduled to host a fundraiser for the Covenant School in Nashville, Tennessee, where a school shooting occurred in March.
Aldean, a conservative, responded to the accusations on Tuesday, expressing his displeasure at being labeled as someone who released a “pro-lynching song” and criticizing the comparison made between his song and the Black Lives Matter protests. He clarified that the song does not reference race in any of its lyrics and that the footage used in the music video was not from news footage of riots. Aldean also shared his hope for a return to a time when headlines didn’t keep us up at night, emphasizing that “Try That In A Small Town” is about the unity and care for neighbors, regardless of differences.
Showing her support for her husband, Brittany Aldean posted a photo of the couple on social media, captioning it with the words, “Never apologize for speaking the truth.”
The Removal of the Music Video
Although the song was released in May, its music video was uploaded to YouTube on Friday. The video includes footage of a U.S. flag burning, someone holding a Molotov cocktail, and people breaking into jewelry displays. CMT, a television network dedicated to country music videos, reportedly removed the video on Monday.
The lyrics of the song include the lines, “Cuss out a cop, spit in his face/Stomp on the flag and light it up/Yeah, ya think you’re tough/Well, try that in a small town/See how far ya make it down the road.”
Support from Notable Conservatives
Jason Aldean has received support from various notable conservatives, including Governor Kristi Noem (R-SD), 2024 presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy, and Donald Trump Jr.
