Pfizer plant destroyed by tornado; 50,000 medicine pallets damaged: Report.
A Devastating Tornado Hits Pfizer Facility in North Carolina
A tornado tore through a Pfizer manufacturing facility in North Carolina on Wednesday afternoon, causing extensive damage to a crucial stockpile of medicines used in hospitals across the United States.
Widespread Destruction
The destructive tornado not only wreaked havoc on the Pfizer Rocky Mount facility but also caused significant damage to vegetation and homes in Nash County.
Medicine Stockpile in Ruins
Nash County Sheriff Keith Stone reported that approximately 50,000 pallets of medicine were scattered and damaged by the rain and wind within the facility.
Pfizer’s Response
Pfizer confirmed the damage caused by the tornado and assured that all employees followed safety protocols and were safely evacuated.
The company stated, ”We are currently assessing the situation to determine the impact on production. Our thoughts are with our colleagues, patients, and the community as we work towards rebuilding after this severe weather event.”
A World-Class Facility
The Pfizer Rocky Mount facility, spanning over 250 acres in Eastern North Carolina, is one of the largest sterile injectable facilities globally, with more than 1.4 million square feet of manufacturing space.
This facility plays a vital role in producing nearly a quarter of all sterile injectables used in U.S. hospitals, including anesthesia, analgesia, therapeutics, anti-infectives, and neuromuscular blockers.
From ampules, vials, and syringes to IV bags and semi-rigid bottles, the facility manufactures a wide range of products, with over 400 million units leaving the site annually to help patients worldwide.
