Eventbrite cancels ‘Let Women Speak’ event due to ‘hateful content’.
Eventbrite Removes Listing of “Let Women Speak Austin” Event
Eventbrite has stirred controversy by removing the listing of an upcoming event called “Let Women Speak Austin,” hosted by the Independent Women’s Network (IWN). The event aims to protect women’s sex-specific spaces, such as restrooms and locker rooms.
In an email sent to the IWN, Eventbrite stated that the event violated its rules. “We have determined that your event is not permitted on the Eventbrite platform as it violates our Community Guidelines and Terms of Service, specifically our policy on Hateful, Dangerous, or Violent Content and Events,” the email said. “As a result, your event has been unpublished.”
The event, scheduled for August 12th at the Texas State Capitol, will emphasize the importance of preserving spaces like bathrooms, locker rooms, prisons, dressing rooms, and sororities. The Independent Women’s Network (IWN) believes that events like this are crucial for advocating the preservation of these single-sex spaces.
IWN is calling on Texas Republican Gov. Greg Abbott to take action in protecting women’s spaces. They argue that women and girls still lack privacy guarantees in places such as bathrooms, dressing rooms, locker rooms, shelters, prisons, and dormitories.
A letter from the IWN strongly criticized Eventbrite’s decision to remove the event listing, labeling it as “blatantly sexist.” The letter argues that inviting survivors of sexual assault to share their concerns about undressing in front of biological males is not hateful, but empowering.
The letter, signed by IWN Austin chapter leader Michelle Evans and Independent Women’s Forum President Carrie Lukas, also highlights the importance of giving a voice to female athletes who have suffered physical harm and lost opportunities due to competing against biological males.
“Your team of ‘Trust and Safety experts’ insults every woman in America by labeling events like these as ‘hateful’,” the letter from IWN passionately states.
Despite the removal of the listing, IWN has confirmed that the event will proceed as planned. The organization asserts that the number of women ready to publicly express their dissent grows with every retweet about the deplatforming.
“Stop silencing women. Reverse this decision immediately,” IWN demands.
Eventbrite has not responded to requests for comment.
