According to the​ Wall Street Journal, hackers with ties to⁣ Beijing have successfully accessed the email account of the ⁤U.S. ambassador to China, resulting in a major espionage operation that may have compromised hundreds of thousands of U.S. ⁢government‌ emails. This alarming breach was revealed on Thursday, shedding light on the extent of cyber ⁣threats faced by⁣ the United States.

In addition to the ambassador, Daniel Kritenbrink, the assistant secretary of state for East Asia, was also targeted in this wide-scale spying operation, which was recently disclosed​ by Microsoft. The Wall Street Journal cites sources familiar with the matter.

State ⁣Department Investigation Underway

When asked about the reported breach, the State Department declined to provide specific details, stating that their investigation into the spying⁢ operation is ongoing. U.S. ambassador Nicholas‍ Burns’s ⁤embassy in Beijing referred to Secretary of State Antony Blinken’s ⁢recent​ remarks, emphasizing that the United States takes any action targeting its government, companies, ⁣or citizens‌ very seriously‌ and ​will respond accordingly.

The‍ embassy’s spokesman, Liu Pengyu, dismissed the speculation surrounding the​ source of the attacks as “groundless” and ‍called for a professional and responsible approach to​ identifying the true culprits.

Microsoft’s Security Practices Under Scrutiny

Last week, Microsoft revealed that Chinese hackers exploited a flaw‍ in its code and misappropriated one of its digital​ keys to steal emails from U.S. government agencies and other clients. The breach ⁤has raised concerns about Microsoft’s security practices, with officials and lawmakers urging the company to provide its highest level of digital auditing, known as logging, free of‌ charge ​to all customers.
