United States Attorney David Weiss to Appear for Congressional Hearing on Hunter Biden Investigation
United States Attorney David Weiss, who has been leading the federal investigation into Hunter Biden, is set to testify in a congressional hearing, according to three House chairmen. Representatives Jim Jordan (R-OH), James Comer (R-KY), and Jason Smith (R-MO) confirmed in a letter that the Department of Justice has informed congressional staff that Weiss will participate in a hearing with the House Judiciary Committee at a date yet to be determined.

In the letter addressed to Attorney General Merrick Garland, the three chairmen reiterated their demand for interviews with nearly a dozen other DOJ witnesses before Weiss’s appearance. They have previously requested interviews with nine DOJ and two FBI officials who they believe possess crucial information regarding allegations of politicization and misconduct in the Department’s investigation of Hunter Biden.
Weiss, after a thorough investigation involving the FBI and IRS, brought two misdemeanor tax charges and one felony gun charge against President Joe Biden’s son in June. It is expected that Hunter Biden will plead guilty to the former two charges and enter a pretrial diversion program for the third charge.
The chairmen, along with other Republicans, have criticized the plea agreement as a “sweetheart deal” and have called for potential legislative reforms. They have suggested modifications to ”special attorney” and “special counsel” rules, reforms to the Tax Division of DOJ, and an expansion of the Internal Revenue Service’s ability to share tax information with Congress.
The chairmen have vowed to subpoena Attorney General Garland if he does not begin scheduling interviews with the requested DOJ witnesses by July 24. However, the DOJ has expressed resistance to their demands, citing ongoing investigations and pending court matters as reasons for withholding certain information.
In their letter, the chairmen emphasized the importance of DOJ’s communication with Congress and highlighted the precedent of non-Senate-confirmed and line-level employees testifying in the past. They have been conducting parallel investigations into both Joe Biden and his son, with Comer focusing on Hunter Biden’s foreign business schemes, Jordan probing potential special treatment given to the Bidens by the DOJ, and Smith examining allegations of mishandling the investigation of Hunter Biden by the IRS and DOJ.
The chairmen also expressed interest in Weiss’s ”inconsistent representations” of his authority in leading the case. They referred to testimony from IRS whistleblowers who alleged that Weiss, a Trump-appointed official, was prevented from bringing charges against Hunter Biden in California and Washington, D.C. Weiss initially claimed to have “ultimate authority” on filing charges but later stated that he was “geographically limited” to Delaware and would need “special attorney” status to bring charges in another jurisdiction.
The chairmen concluded their letter by suggesting that Weiss’s shifting statements about his authority raise concerns about improper political considerations influencing the Department’s investigative and prosecutorial function.
